Sunday Post | The First Book Club Meeting

Welcome to the Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer to share weekly news and updates on what we’ve been up to on our blog, with our books, and book-related happenings.

The First Book Club Meeting

We had our first book club meeting this weekend! It was so much fun; we talked about our book of the month – Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, it was just okay for most of us – and also got to know each other a little bit.

It’s still funny to me that not even a month ago I was joking about wanting a book club and then it happened. I have to call back the “I want a million dollars” joke, because it’s not really a joke, I do want a million dollars! Please, thank you, Universe!

Other than that, last week was pretty uneventful. I was a little low energy and not feeling my best, and I found myself falling asleep while reading a couple of times. I took a lot of naps!

Books I read last week:

I wasn’t really satisfied with the first two books I read last week. The Bookshop on the Corner started off fine but I ended up not really liking the story and characters. And Remarkably Bright Creatures was a bit of a disappointment because I thought it was going to be more octopus-centric than it was. One of my book club members said that she felt like the author could’ve omitted the octopus’ POV entirely from the story and it wouldn’t have changed the story, and I agree.

Dave Grohl’s The Storyteller made me very happy though! I listened to it on audio with Dave himself narrating, and it was wonderful to listen to his stories about his life, his family, his musical journey. I just finished it last night so I haven’t written a review yet, but the gist is that I love it, and I love him, and I feel so inspired!

My husband is a musician and a fan of the Foo Fighters, so I kept telling him little anecdotes from the book, and he got interested and put a hold on the audiobook to listen for himself, which made me so happy! I’ve been trying for the longest time to get my husband to read more and discuss books with me, and apparently, all I had to do was read books about music and musicians! I’m making a list and taking recommendations, so if you’ve got a good one, let me know!

Last Week on The Blog

This Week

I’m currently in the middle of The Bad Weather Friend by Dean Koontz. And I’ve just started the first Murderbot Diaries on audio. I’m also still rereading The Count of Monte Cristo for the readalong, and I promised a friend that I’d start reading the Elements of Cadence series by Rebecca Ross this week.

How was your week? I hope you had a great week last week, and I hope you have a great one again this week!

  1. Sorry that two of your reads were a bit ‘meh’ – but those books are necessary to make the best shine a bit brighter. And so glad you got your wish for a book club. Fingers crossed for the million dollars… Have a great week, Haze:).

  2. I am so happy for you that you found a book club and already had you first meeting! Sounds like you had fun even though the book was just okay for most of you. Sorry you were feeling low on energy, I do think naps are great. Have a great week!

  3. i read the book shop on the corner and i agree it wasw intersting at the start but then fell flat towards the end. I done lots of online book clubs but recently my local library stared a book club so jumped on it since the library right down the street. We only met twice first book was kind of meh so we see what everyone thinks of our second book. I am definately the odd duck in the group as i read mostly fantasy and they don’t i also one of the youngest as most are much older then me i am in my mid fourties and pretty sure they are in there 60 or older. But that ok hopefully i get to read some new to me type things rather then the same old i have stacked up at home. I love fantasy just fine but i not gonna force others to read it. We meet once a month on the first firday at noon so that probably another reason we don’t have younger members they are stuck at work when we meet. I happen to work from home as a caregiver so it a bit easier for me to get away for an hour or so that time of day. Hope you enjoy your book club.

    • Oh, how fun that your library started a book club! I like to read fantasy most of the time too but I don’t mind reading other genres as well. I hope you enjoy your book club too and all the new-to-you books!

  4. How wonderful to have your book club wish come to fruition. And nice to hook your husband into a book, well done. Hope you will be over you tiredness soon. Take care.

  5. I’m glad you had fun at your first book club meeting, even if you didn’t completely like the book. And so funny about your husband and reading. Mine is similar, he doesn’t like novels but loves books about animals😁 Have a good week, Haze!

    • Books about animals are difficult for me. They’re always so sweet and heartwarming and funny, but I always worry something’s going to happen to the animals. =(

  6. Ijust came from another blog recommending Remarkably Bright Creatures but I have been on the fence about it. I’ll take your groups meh opinion of it and skip it.

  7. I thought I was going to love Remarkably Bright Creatures but I found it to be okay. Most of the rest of our book club loved it, though.’

I’m sorry you’ve been feeling a little tired. I have, too. Let’s both rest and relax!

  8. I’m glad the first meeting went well, even if the book wasn’t a favourite.
Congrats on getting your husband to read a book, I gave up a long time ago. He hasn’t read a book since highschool!

Wishing you a happy reading week

    • Aww, sorry about your husband. I hope he’ll find books he’ll enjoy one day. And thank you, I hope you have a happy reading week too!

  9. I love that you found a topic that’s got your husband interested in reading! When I worked as a children’s librarians, I would help kids who said they don’t like reading find books about their non-fiction interests like sharks and cars, haha. I am a big fan of Depeche Mode so I’ve read a few books about them – I recommend STRIPPED if he also likes that band 😛

    • That’s a brilliant way to get kids into reading! (And my husband too! 😂) I don’t think he’s a fan of Depeche Mode as far as I know, but he loves Radiohead so I might look into if there’s a book about them. Thanks for the rec!
