Top Ten Tuesday | Satisfying Book Series

Posted October 6, 2025 by Haze in Top Ten Tuesday, Weekly Book Memes / 39 Comments

Welcome to Top Ten Tuesday, a weekly bookish meme hosted by Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl that features a different bookish topic every week.

Today’s topic is Satisfying Book Series

This was a dangerous topic for me; I ended up reminiscing about so many of these series and wanting to reread them! Plus, it also reminded me of many series I haven’t finished and now I have more books on my TBR!

Top Ten Satisfying Book Series

  1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Whether you count this series as just the original trilogy, or also include the two prequels, this is one of my favorite series that only gets better with every reread. I get more out of it and see things I missed before every time I read it.
  2. Super Powereds by Drew Hayes – I had so much fun with this series. The writing is definitely not sophisticated at all, but the storytelling is so immersive and I love all the characters! It was fun and thrills all the way from start to finish.
  3. The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni – Objectively, this isn’t as well known as the other books on the list but I have fond memories of reading it, and I think maybe one of the reasons I loved it is because I came in without any expectations and ended up loving it.
  4. The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee – This series is incredible in a way I’m not sure how to describe. It feels real. It feels important. It feels like an epic that should be in the realm of LOTR but for urban fantasy. It is intense, and just so good.
  5. Rook & Rose by M.A. Carrick – I love the world-building and magical system in this series. I also really love the characters and their chemistry with each other. It’s one of the newer series I’ve finished (that wasn’t a reread) and that I know I will love even more with every reread.
  6. Oz: The Complete Collection by L. Frank Baum – This is my first time reading the Oz books and I was so surprised at how much more there is to them compared to the movies and Wicked retelling. I’m sure I would’ve loved these stories as a child, but honestly, they are pretty incredible reading as an adult too!
  7. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery – These are books I read as a child and they have remained one of my favorite series ever since. They are some of my favorite comfort reads and I know I can never go wrong with them.
  8. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – It’s been a while since I read this series but I remember loving them so much at the time. I’m definitely feeling the itch to reread!
  9. Dragonlance: Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – I just reread the first three books and have put it on hold because I’m missing the fourth book. I’d forgotten so much of the details and was quite surprised, and shocked, by some of the things that happened, but they are still amazing!
  10. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer – Another series I haven’t read in a while. I love fairytale retellings and I loved the different perspectives this series offered. It’s time to schedule a reread for these books too!

I’m usually good about limiting my TTT list to ten, but here are some notable ones I loved but didn’t put on the list because they are still ongoing or unfinished, or some other reason. They are all still worth reading though, imho!

  1. Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman – Currently reading for the first time and I’m on the 6th book. It’s still ongoing but I love every book so far!
  2. Red Rising Saga by Pierce Brown – If you count only the first three books, they’re finished and very good on their own, but the story that started from Book 4 onwards isn’t finished yet and I’m still waiting anxiously to find out what happens to my beloved characters!
  3. Wayfarers by Becky Chambers – This series is finished as far as I know, and I love it more than some of the other books in the TTT list, but every book is pretty much only tangentially related and can be read as standalones, so I decided to keep it off the TTT list.
  4. Fred, The Vampire Accountant by Drew Hayes – This is also a finished series and one I loved, but I already have a series by the same author on the TTT so this one only gets a notable mention.
  5. The Murderbot Dairies by Martha Wells – Still ongoing, and there’s also a TV series out! I am loving it so much so far!
  6. Heartstopper by Alice Oseman – This series has my heart. I love it. I was so sad to hear the TV series has been cancelled, but I’m glad there’s still a book to look forward to.
  7. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin – I know, I know! But I was already listing unfinished book series, so I might as well, right?! Thing is, whether this series ever gets finished or not, the ones that are already out are amazing, and I honestly think they are still worth reading even if we never get an ending. These books helped me through a tough time and I can’t imagine never having them in my life.

Have you read any of these series? What did you think of them? Would you read any of them?

Sunday Post | Conquered

Posted November 9, 2024 by Haze in Sunday Post, Weekly Book Memes / 9 Comments

Welcome to the Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer to share weekly news and updates on what we’ve been up to on our blog, with our books, and book-related happenings.

The Conqueror Challenge

I did it!! I finished my first challenge with The Conqueror Challenge with two days to spare!

Honestly, ever since the weather started getting cooler, I’ve been having a harder time with motivating myself to run and the last few weeks were hard. The Conqueror Challenge helps to motivate me, but even then I was almost going to extend my time goal because I felt so demotivated last week.

Posting about it here kept me accountable, and made me want to finish the challenge sooner so that I would be able to share on this Sunday Post that I did it!

So yes! I did it! I finished the last 5.2km just this morning! And it may or may not be a big deal for anyone else – we are all on our own personal journeys – but it’s a big deal to me and I’m proud of myself!

I just sent in for my medal and I’ll post a picture of it as soon as I receive it! Now on to the next challenge!

And other things

My project is coming along nicely. I have a little anxiety about not being able to make it in time, or that I won’t do a good job, but I keep reminding myself that finished is better than perfect. I’m sorry for being so mysterious about it but I promise that I’ll tell all once it’s done!

I’ve also been busy crocheting Christmas gifts. I’m a little late starting, but I’ve got some time and I think I’ll be able to finish in time. It’s great because I get to listen to audiobooks while crocheting, doing two of my favorite things at the same time!

As for books and reading; I only finished a single book last week. I’m still working through my 60-hour audiobook, Super Powereds: Year 4 by Drew Hayes, so I have an excuse!!

The Books

Books I read last week:

  1. Dear Enemy by Jean Webster – It’s unfair to compare it with Daddy-Long-Legs because they’re totally different stories but it’s hard not to compare them either. I love Daddy-Long-Legs too much and the first time I read Dear Enemy, I didn’t like it much at all. I loved it more this time around because I was able to manage my expectations this time and have a better reading experience.

Book(s) I’m reading:

  1. Super Powereds: Year 4 by Drew Hayes – On hour 37 of a 60-hour audiobook. I knew it was going to take up a chunk of the week! But I’m loving it and I don’t want it to end either. My only consolation is that the author has got other books I can read, but I’m sure I’ll miss these characters and this story.
  2. Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan – I am 25% into this book and I am loving it! The MC gets sucked into the world of her favorite books and it is so fun!!

Last Week on The Blog

This Week

I have so many books accumulating on my TBR because I spent so many hours with the Super Powered series. Maybe once I finish Super Powereds: Year 4, I’ll be able to make a dent on my TBR again!

How was your week? I hope you had a great week last week, and I hope you have a great one again this week!

Sunday Post | Under The Weather

Posted October 26, 2024 by Haze in Sunday Post, Weekly Book Memes / 4 Comments

Welcome to the Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer to share weekly news and updates on what we’ve been up to on our blog, with our books, and book-related happenings.

Under the Weather

I came down with a cold the first half of last week and was pretty much tired the whole of the week. I was quite miserable, not just because of the cold, but also because I was already behind with work since the week before and I’d intended to catch up last week but only got further behind. I didn’t even do the Top Ten Tuesday for the week, and I haven’t caught up to replying comments either. 😭

As for The Conqueror Challenge, I didn’t do well since I was sick, but I did push a little more towards the end of the week and got 18km out of my 20km goal. I should mention that 6km of it was only done this morning.

Really hoping for a better, healthier, and more productive week coming up!

The Books

Books I read last week:

  1. Super Powereds: Year 1 by Drew Hayes – I’m enjoying this series so much even though I mentioned earlier that the writing is quite amateurish. The story and the characters are really good though!
  2. Super Powereds: Year 2 by Drew Hayes – The first book was 26 hours, this one was 32 hours and just as entertaining. I just finished it last night!
  3. Pet Sematary by Stephen King – This is both a buddy read on my online bookclub, and the BOTM for my in-person bookclub! It’s harrowing, horrifying, and soooo good!

Book(s) I’m reading:

  1. Super Powereds: Year 3 by Drew Hayes – A whopping 41 hours on audio! I just started it this morning.
  2. The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young – It’s been on my TBR and it’s also a buddy read. I’m only on Chapter 4 right now.

Last Week on The Blog

This Week

It’s the last week of the month so I have some wrapping up to do. I’d like to try to finish a couple more books before the month is over too.

How was your week? I hope you had a great week last week, and I hope you have a great one again this week!

Book Review | Super Powereds : Year 1 by Drew Hayes

Posted October 25, 2024 by Haze in Book Reviews / 0 Comments

Super Powereds : Year 1 by Drew Hayes

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop student with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Five of this year’s freshmen are extra special. They have a secret aside from their abilities, one that they must guard from even their classmates. Because for every one person in the world with abilities they can control, there are three who lack such skill. These lesser super beings, Powereds as they are called, have always been treated as burdens and second class citizens. Though there has been ample research in the area, no one has ever succeeded in turning a Powered into a regular human, let alone a Super.

That is, until now…

For the Reading Challenge(s):
2024 Audiobook Challenge

The Reason

Someone recommended it as an audiobook worth listening to, so I decided to try it!

The Quotes

“Sometimes, attaining the impossible was simply a matter of continuously putting one foot in front of the other, no matter what.”

“In Seattle there is a constant hope for a period called “two days in a row when it doesn’t fucking rain.”

“The truth had its place, and it was called a deathbed.”

“Playing with new stuff is for down time. This is crunch time. Crunch time is for focusing on what you’ve got.”

The Narrator(s)

Kyle McCarley. I love the narration and all the voices. I personally feel like this book isn’t very well-written, but the narrator makes it highly enjoyable to listen to!

My Thoughts

I’ve mentioned a couple of times that I feel that this book isn’t very well-written. I feel like it’s quite amateurish, to be quite honest – and I’ll say why in a minute – but somehow I am loving this book so much and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

On why I feel it’s amateurish; the most noticeable thing is all the he said, she said, they said, and all the variations of it. So many variations of it! Not only did they “said”, they also asked, answered, implied, surmised, agreed, acquiesced, snapped, shot back, spat out, pointed out, commented, reciprocated, complimented, admitted, chastised, scolded, cursed, encouraged, explained, countered, chided, mused, quipped, confirmed, noted, inquired, interjected, praised, protested, reiterated, complained, sighed, chuckled, repeated, joked, pried…

And they often did the above; with a smile, with a grin, with a shrug, with a smirk, with a pause, with incredulity, optimistically, sadly, longingly, with a surprisingly reassuring smile, with a genuine smile, with a slow smile, with an unwitting grin, with a big grin, respectfully, obediently, with a kiss, tentatively, deferentially, with a more sincere smile…

It’s gotten to the point where I’m not annoyed but impressed with the vocabulary! However, writing aside, I really do enjoy the story and there are a lot of things to like about it.

The best thing about it, I feel, is that the characters are all very distinct, interesting, and most of all, consistent. I also love the found family element, and the plotting and strategizing is done very well! I mean, it’s basically all the things we like about Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Red Rising, and other books in that vein, but lower stakes and more fun.

Kids go to a school to learn to hone their skills and powers. They have tests and competitions to get ahead, they make friends and connections, they train and strategized, they fight against bad guys but also navigate the student and young adult life. They live, they love, they laugh. And I am thoroughly enjoying myself!

My Rating

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars. Even with the bad writing! Because it’s just so fun and enjoyable and I’m even getting enjoyment from the bad writing.

Have you read this book? Would you read this book? Did you like the book or do you think you would like it?
