Good Food with Good Friends
This was a good week for Malaysian food; I made Hokkien Mee yesterday, and today I went to a Malaysian restaurant with my bookclub friends and had Chili Pan Mee. I don’t know, I was craving noodles this weekend! Our bookclub meeting was supposed to be the weekend before, but many of us couldn’t make it in the last minute so we decided to do lunch today instead.
It has been a long, long time since I made Hokkien Mee, and obviously it’s not the same as the ones you find in Malaysian hawker stalls because I’m using different ingredients and I don’t have sambal belacan on hand, but I did make the pork fat crisps and the husband loved it, so yay!
The pictures aren’t great but you can see just from the presentation which one is homemade and which one was restaurant-made! That one veggie piece in the middle of the noodle dish is a weird aesthetic, but it all went happily down our stomachs anyway. Honestly, the picture doesn’t do it justice, it was so good (or maybe I was just too hungry)! The Chili Pan Mee wasn’t the same as the ones back in Malaysia, but that’s to be expected and I appreciate the effort. I have eaten there before and a lot of the other Malaysian food on the menu are amazing, I just wanted to try the noodles today.

Books I read last week:
The Butcher’s Masquerade by Matt Dinniman – I am still having so much fun with this series even though it does actually get more painful in some ways. I think it showcases how we can have hard-hitting stories but still keep our humor intact and make the best out of whatever situation we find ourselves in. Obviously Jeff Hays’ narration plays a big part in making the books so enjoyable too!
A Sorceress Comes To Call by T. Kingfisher – I started reading this with three more days to go before I had to return it to the library, and I expected to take some time to get into it since I was so engrossed in the DCC books, but surprisingly and happily, it sucked me in immediately and I finished it in two sittings! I loved it and I’m so glad I read it instead of letting the due date lapse!
Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman – I barely finished this in time for my bookclub meeting today! It was good but I feel like I rushed it and that wasn’t fair to the story because there were parts where dreams and hallucintions play an important role in the plot and I got really confused about what was really happening. I also didn’t like the narrator for some of the voices so that played a part in my enjoyment of the story.
Books I’m reading:
The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman – I couldn’t resist. I took a break already, reading two other books in between the last one, but I had to come back to Carl and Donut!
The Devils by Joe Abercrombie – My attempt to still continue reading other book obligations even though I can’t stay away from DCC. I’m about 10% in and it’s reminding me a lot of Between Two Fires, so far! But I love the humor here, and I love Steven Pacey as the narrator!

It’s October and you know what that means; spooky books!
I’m doing really well on my October TBR intentions so far! I’ve finished three books on my list already, and started two others. I’m hoping that if I finish them quickly I’ll have enough time for some Stephen King as well and maybe more horror!

The Universe Works in Mysterious Ways
It was another challenging week for me but overall I think it was good in many ways. One of the things I was most stoked about was that I got Brené Brown’s new book, Strong Ground, the day it released!
I am a huge fan of her works but I didn’t even know she had a book coming out and only found out about it the night before as I was going to bed. The next day, I was looking into where I could get the book and how much it cost, and apparently it was selling for $31.50 (plus tax) at a bookstore near me. And guess what? I just happened to have a giftcard for that bookstore that I had been holding on to for about two years (because I hardly buy physical books anymore) and it had exactly $31.50 left on it!!
It was just so serendipitous and I was like, the Universe wants me to have this book!
And then later the same day, I found out that there was a 2-for-1 sale on Audible, and one of the books on the sale was Book 5 of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series! I had just finished Book 4 and was going to get Book 5 anyway, and now I get another free book out of it – Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, which has been on my TBR for a long time!
This hardly ever happens to me, and then twice in one day! Perhaps the Universe was making up for the other challenging things that happened last week (that we won’t talk about right now), but hey, I’ll take it! I’ll always be grateful for the good things, no matter how small, and I try to focus on the positive when I can.
Speaking of positive, good things; thank you so much to all of you who took the time to listen to our music that I shared here last week! We’ve gotten some great feedback and we’re really excited to get better and share more music with you!

Books I read last week:
The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman – There were a couple of reveals in this book that shook me, and that ending, omg! These books just keep getting better and better. I was going to stop at this book and take a break from the series because I had other book obligations, but I couldn’t stop after that ending, so I just kept reading!
Books I’m reading:
The Butcher’s Masquerade by Matt Dinniman – Currently 4 hours into a 23-hour book. We haven’t gotten into the juicy stuff yet, but there’s been some funny and heartwarming scenes already.
Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman – I’m 4.5 hours into this 14-hour book. It’s my in-person bookclub’s botm and we were supposed to meet today (Saturday), but many of us couldn’t make it last minute so we’ve postponed the discussion to next week, which gives me more time to finish!
Last Week on The Blog
Just the TTT. I’ve only been reading Dungeon Crawler Carl, so the only book reviews I need to write are all Dungeon Crawler Carl books! I haven’t decided if I’ll write them all after I finish all the existing books, or if I should get started on each one soon!
Library due dates! I need to finish A Sorceress Comes to Call this week if I don’t want to go back on the queue and wait until it’s my turn again! But also, to be honest, I feel like I don’t have the bandwidth for focusing on new storylines at the moment, and being on a DCC binge helps because I’m already familiar with the world.

Our Music is Out!
Last week my husband and I finally released some original music that we’d been working on for ages and ages and ages!! It’s our first collaboration album under the band name SpaceBlaze; we released three songs on Monday but there are more coming soon, so please take a listen and if you like it, please bookmark and come back for the rest!
I have been so excited to share this for such a long time but there have been so many unexpected delays and setbacks because we’re doing everything on our own; from conception to creation, to recording, post-production, and publishing. We had no idea what we were doing!! But we made it, finally!
It’s not perfect, obviously, but I hope you’ll enjoy the effort and I appreciate any feedback!
We’re also on other music platforms, so if Spotify doesn’t work for you, feel free to listen on whichever ones you use. My husband has also released some instrumental covers under the name GuitarLone, if you’re interested in checking that out!
In other news, I had my first exam on Wednesday and got my results back already! The bad news is that I made some silly mistakes, the good news is that I got an A anyway! Yayy! And the next exam is in two weeks… yay…😅
I’m still struggling a little with time management and I’m falling behind on almost everything but I’m feeling just a tiny bit better about it this week because the instructors have graciously extended the due dates for a couple of assignments that were originally due this weekend.
I need to chill and remind myself that as long as I pass the courses, I’m happy! I don’t need to have perfect grades! I don’t need to have a clean house! I can wear my dirty clothes several times before they start smelling! I’m sure the people covering their noses when I get close were just having allergies! I can make my husband cook every day for the foreseeable future, or just eat bread and cereal! For every meal! Sounds like a plan.

Books I read last week:
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman – The second book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. More fun, more hijinks. I already love Carl and Donut, but I also love that we are seeing more of other characters. I’m not sure I can say much without giving away spoilers, but I have to say that I can’t imagine a more adorable pet for Donut than Mongo!
The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Matt Dinniman – This one was a lot more emotional for me than the first two. Yes, the books are fun and hilarious, but the things that happen in the book are also kind of f’d up and traumatizing, and I think it’s good that they take it seriously and remind us of that occasionally. I love how we are seeing the characters grow and develop more depth.
Books I’m reading:
The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman – Just started at Ch 2. I can’t seem to stop reading about Carl and Donut!
A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher – I love Kingfisher and I really want to read this book but I’m on a roll with DCC, and the only reason I also started this book is because it’s a borrowed library book and there’s a deadline, and I want to make sure I finish it before I have to return it!
At this point, I’m not sure if I’ll get to any of my intended TBR for the month since I have been very engrossed in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series and absolutely loving them! I would love to finish the whole series back-to-back, but I do want to finish A Sorceress Comes to Call before I have to return it, and I also have an in-person bookclub happening the coming weekend and I need to read the BOTM!

All’s Well That Ends Well
I was hoping the second week of school would be easier but the Universe had other plans for me. This time again, it wasn’t school kicking my butt although I have to admit I’m finding myself using parts of my brain I haven’t accessed in years and that’s a challenge in itself.
Nope, what happened was we had a plumbing issue on Monday, and we were lucky enough that we got the plumber to come on Tuesday, but those couple of days weren’t fun, let me tell you. And then on Thursday, we woke up to one of our cats, Pepper, limping, and after having Loki just passing a few months ago, I was perhaps a tad paranoid and worried about something bad happening to Pepper as well. I was anxiously monitoring and babying her the whole day. Fortunately, she seemed a lot better the next morning and is pretty much back to normal now. (I’m still babying her a little bit though.)
So yeah, it was an emotionally difficult and anxiety-ridden week for me. I didn’t get much sleep, which made it difficult for me to concentrate in class as well. I was so glad for the weekend! Everything is looking up this weekend!
Please let the coming week be as easy breezy as can be! I should mention I have my first exam this week, but the sentiment stands! Please let this week be so easy breezy that I’ll ease and breeze through the exam too!

Books I read last week:
Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – It was so much more intense than I remembered! To be fair, it’s been maybe 30 years since I last read it, but I still love it! I was initially going to read the Dragons of Summer Flame after this one but just found out that there’s another book that I don’t have in between these two, so I’m putting the series on hold.
Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman – I read this last year and loved it, but haven’t finished the series, so I reread to refresh my memory and I intend to finish the series this time!
Books I’m reading:
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman – I also read this last year and stopped halfway through book 3. Rereading it for a refresher and finishing the rest of the books. I’m on Ch 7 now!
The Devils by Joe Abercrombie – I’m only on the third chapter, which is only 3% in, but it’s already really interesting and the characters are really standing out.
Last Week on The Blog
I missed out on Top Ten Tuesday last week, but I got a couple of reviews done!
I have temporarily given up on S. by JJ Abrams and Doug Dorst. I don’t have the mental power for an intellectual book like that right now. The Dungeon Crawler Carl series weren’t really in my plans this month, but I just needed something fun and it fits the bill!

The First Week of School
I was quite overwhelmed this first week of school! It wasn’t so much the courses, but all the setups and signups and logins, and apps and softwares I had to install for the courses. It’s been such a long while since I went to college as a young adult and now everything has been digitized! I don’t necessarily have a problem with technology, and in fact, I like having the courses available online, but I don’t like having so many different apps for so many different things!
Maybe this is karma; I used to complain about my parents being technology dinosaurs when I was a teenager and this is the Universe’s way of paying me back! 😂
It was a really busy week nevertheless, and I wasn’t able to read as much as I wanted but I did manage a couple of books! Plus I caught up on a few reviews! Hopefully, things will settle down once I get all the setups done, but I know I also have a lot of study and assignments and exams ahead of me. Is it too soon to start complaining? 😅
The Books
Books I read last week:
Dragons of Winter Night by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – The second book in the Dragonlance Chronicles series. Things escalated a lot faster than I expected but I am still very invested in the story and the characters. The ending was crazy but I started the next book already because I needed to find out what happens next!
Taste by Stanley Tucci – I loved listening to Tucci talk about his relationship with the people in his life through the lens of food and the meals he has with them. He’s such a personable character and I love his work in the acting world as well.
What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami – I picked up this book because of the subject matter and not the author. I’ve never read a single book by Murakami before this one, but I’m very impressed and inspired by his dedication to everything he does in life, including his running, and it has made me curious and wanting to read his books.
Books I’m reading:
Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – Just recently started so there’s not much to say yet. I just really want all my favorite characters to be okay!
If I can, I’ll get the rest of the Dragonlance Chronicles finished this week. It’s been so many years, I just want to feel that resolution to the story. But I do have a couple of other series in the Dragonlance universe to read after this, though I will try to finish other series I’ve started before starting a new one!

School Starts This Week!
I had my orientation last week and I’m excited and anxious as hell. Honestly, I wish I was too cool for school, but I’m feeling very, very uncool right now! 😂
In some ways, I feel like I’m ready and overprepared, in other ways, I feel so unprepared it’s not even funny. Also, I’m fully aware that I’m being really annoying now with all the school talk and how excited I am, but give it a few weeks and I’ll probably start complaining about school then! Hopefully not though!
Yeah, I don’t have much to share other than about going back to school. It’s my whole personality right now! Thank goodness I do have some books to talk about too!

Books I read last week:
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins – This is a reread. I resisted reading this for a long time because I just didn’t feel a need for more books in the THG world, but a friend talked it up and I was pleasantly surprised that I ended up liking it. Reading it the second time now, I’m seeing more of the details I missed before and I love it even more now!
Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa – I don’t usually like “slice of life” novels, but this was my online bookclub’s BOTM, and it was relatively short, so I decided to give it a chance. I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t bad and I liked it well enough.
Books I’m reading:
S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst – I haven’t touched it since the week before! I haven’t had time to immerse myself but I don’t want to leave it too long, otherwise I’ll have to start over.
Dragons of Winter Night by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – The second book in the Dragonlance Chronicles I’m working through. I’m about 45% in.
I will try to get some reading in for S. I’m also hoping to finish Dragons of Winter Night early in the week so I can start Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab.

School On My Mind
I’m ramping up preparations for school. We have an online “orientation” course that I’ve been working through these last few days that I haven’t finished yet. I’ve been organizing my notebooks and getting my textbooks, and kind of going overboard with colored highlighters and tabs – I am well aware I’m being a little extra but I love the idea of aesthetic notes! I’m pretty sure when the time comes for taking notes, all aesthetics will go out the window though!
I also had a wonderful Saturday spent with a friend who used to go to the school I’m going to. She offered to take me on a tour of her favorite spots on campus, which was really fun, and then we went for lunch after, which was really fun too! I think I’m ready for school…? 😅

Books I read last week:
Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang – I am shooketh by this book! I didn’t expect it to be so hard-hitting but yeah, it’s incredible and gave me so much to think about. Now I’m even more excited to read The Sword of Kaigen.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – I just finished this today. I actually just read this last year and was supposed to read the rest of the series as well, but never got to them, so I’m rereading this to refresh my memory before getting to the next books.
Books I’m reading:
S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst – I had never heard of this book until my bookclub started reading it, but it’s essentially a book within a book; the book in question is basically a “prop” of sorts, it’s a fake book that exists for this story. It’s got annotations on the margins made to look like two characters communicating with each other, there are papers, articles, letters, and more stuffed within the pages of the fake book. I’ve just finished the intro and not yet even gotten to the first chapter yet. I’m anticipating that this will take me longer to finish than a regular book!
It’s the last week I have to read the books with an August deadline; two BOTMs with two bookclubs – Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa, and The Power of Myth by Joseph Campbell. I could possibly do the first because it’s shorter but I don’t think I’ll be able to finish The Power of Myth since it requires more focus. We shall see.

Low Battery
I was not as productive last week as the week before, I must have used up all my superhuman capabilities the week before. I did get in a couple of runs, and one of them was even for 8km! Which is probably what exhausted me for the rest of the week. I also didn’t get very much sleep these last couple of days, so the energy is low.
I continued with decluttering and organizing my workspace but I didn’t get as much done as I wanted and I am now seeing just how much clutter I’ve accumulated. I have a hard time throwing stuff out because I always feel like I might need them someday, but I have to learn to do this if I don’t want to be featured in one of those hoarders documentaries one day. Universe, give me strength!
On my watchlist: We just finished watching All the Light We Cannot See on Netflix and it’s really good. I haven’t read the book yet, so I don’t know how it compares, but I love the casting with Hugh Laurie and Mark Ruffalo, and the other actors were amazing too! I can see why the book is popular if the movie is already affecting me like this. I do have the physical book on my shelf and it’s been staring accusingly at me for a while now, so maybe I should read it soon!
I also forced my husband to watch K-Pop Demon Hunters with me! I don’t care that it’s girly and cheesy and cute, it’s also really good! The music is so catchy! I’ve been hearing “Golden” all over social media and had no idea that it came from this show, but once I realized, I was like, I must watch the show! And maybe my husband and I are not its target audience, but I loved it! My husband maybe liked it. But I loved it!

The Keeper of Hidden Books by Madeline Martin – It’s been on my TBR for a while so I’m glad I finally read it! Unfortunately, I didn’t like it as much as the author’s other books, but it was still really good.
The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins – Once I started the first book, it was hard to stop, so I just breezed through them all. It still never fails to get me in the feels. There were so many incredible scenes in the books that just hit me and I cry like a baby.
Books I’m reading:
Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang – From the author of The Sword of Kaigen, which I haven’t read but have heard a lot about! I’ve only just started but I’m sure I’ll want to read The Sword of Kaigen after.
I’m feeling a little rebellious this week and don’t feel like reading my “assigned” books (that I listed for my August TBR). We’ll see where my mood takes me this week!

Superhuman!
Last week I was very responsible. I caught up with almost all my book reviews, updated my reading challenges, did some journaling, got a lot of cleaning and reorganizing done, ran a couple of 5ks, and did some meal planning ahead of time. Am I even human?!
I am proud of me but now I’m not sure if I can ever perform at this level ever again!
It’s not all work and no play though. I read some really good books too, and watched a couple of scary movies – I don’t know why we chose scary movies, it just turned out that way.
On my watchlist: We watched The Monkey and Nosferatu, and they were both really creepy but The Monkey had a little more levity than Nosferatu. I enjoy a little bit of morbid humor sometimes. The Monkey is an adaptation of a Stephen King story and we all know I love Stephen King.
Nosferatu has got an amazing cast and the acting from every one of them was superb. It was so intense, I couldn’t stand it, I had to take breaks in between. If you like horror, I highly recommend both these movies!

Books I read last week:
A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman – I ended up getting this book from the library on a “skip the line” basis and I jumped on it because I’d been wanting to read it for a while. So glad I did! I loved it!
The Long Walk by Stephen King – Also a “skip the line” borrow. And a reread, but it’s been a while. I love how so much of King’s books are psychological. I didn’t remember how he managed to write a whole book out of people just walking, but he did it so well and I’m excited to watch the film adaptation coming out soon!
Haunted Ever After by Jen DeLuca – Erin @ Cracker Crumb Life featured this book in her Top Ten Tuesday Beachy Reads post a couple of weeks ago and I was intrigued! I got the book a couple of days ago and finished it yesterday because it was so good! Thanks for the rec, Erin!

The Keeper of Hidden Books by Madeline Martin – I had a false start last week and got distracted by several other books that “skipped the line” so I’m trying again this week.
Last Week on The Blog
I finished so many book reviews!! I’m almost all caught up, but I’m reading just a little faster than I’m reviewing and I feel like I need new rules that I can’t start a book until I’m done reviewing the one I just finished! I know I don’t have to take reviewing so seriously and I do sometimes skip them, but it’s important to me to record the books I’ve read somewhere, otherwise I’ll forget them and feel like I need to read them again.

Happy August!
I did very well last week on my fitness! I ran 5k on the treadmill three times last week after months of not running at all. It might just be that I’m feeling a little more motivated coming back to it after so long, but I fully intend on keeping it up as consistently as possible in the next few months. Fingers crossed!
I also did some more back-to-school prep; setting up my student ID, shopping for backpacks (I haven’t found one but I’m doing the research!), academic calendars, stationery, and other miscellanous things. I’m excited about going back to school and I’m making a bigger deal out of it than necessary! One more month to go and I’m counting down the days!
On my watchlist: We watched Deep Cover and it was one of the funnest, most hilarious shows I’ve watched in a while. Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed are three actors I’ve enjoyed, and they have such great chemistry together here. It gave me so much pleasure to watch them and I highly recommend the movie if you want a good laugh.
We also watched Untamed with Eric Bana, Sam Neill, Lily Santiago, and others, and it was really good too. I didn’t like Eric Bana’s character very much, in fact there were a lot of characters whose morals were questionable, but I did love Lily Santiago’s character, and the storytelling really pulled me in.
The Books
Books I read last week:
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas – Finished for the nth time and I’m happily surprised that I still love it as much as ever. This is the 4th time I’m reading it in 4 years and I was afraid I might get tired of it, but I didn’t! I’m not going to push it though, I think I’m going to leave it for a couple of years before I reread again.
Revival by Stephen King – This is objectively a good story but I didn’t connect with it as much as I hoped. I’m not sure if it’s because it was overhyped and I went in with overly high expectations, or if I maybe rushed through the book too quickly. To be fair, I do tend to rush through my first time reading exciting books and there are several SK books that I loved more in the rereading.
The Crêpes of Wrath by Sarah Fox – I read it for the punny title and I do enjoy cozy mysteries. This one was okay, I enjoyed it well enough, but I don’t think I’ll be reading the rest of the series.

The Keeper of Hidden Books by Madeline Martin – I just started it. It’s been on my TBR so long, I’m glad to finally be reading this!
Last Week on The Blog
I spent some time doing admin on the blog! I’ve been leaving the “challenges” section of my book reviews blank because I hadn’t been deliberate about reading books for the challenges, but I finally took a look at them and have updated The 52 Book Club’s 2025 Reading Challenge with books that fit! I’m not done with the updates and the challenges aren’t finished, but I’m glad to see I’m not as far behind as I thought!
