Hierarchy Series by James Islington

AUDI. VICE. TACE.

The Catenan Republic-the Hierarchy-may rule the world, but they do not know everything.

I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned three years ago, and that only good fortune has got me into their most prestigious school. I tell them that, when I graduate, I will allow my strength and drive-what they call Will-to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as everyone must do.

I tell them that I belong, and they believe me.

But the truth is that I have been sent to the Academy to solve a murder. To search for an ancient weapon. To uncover secrets that may tear the Republic apart.

And that I will never cede my Will to the empire that executed my family.

To survive, though, I will have to rise through the Academy’s ranks, and win. Because if I cannot, those who know my real name will no longer have any use for me.

And if the Hierarchy finds out who I truly am, they will kill me.

The Reason

A friend talked about these books recently and I got curious!

The Quotes

“Silence is a statement, Diago. Inaction picks a side. And when those lead to personal benefit, they are complicity.”

“There comes a point in every man’s life where he can rail against the unfairness of the world until he loses, or he can do his best in it. Remain a victim, or become a survivor.”

“They know the system is wrong, but they choose not to think or speak up or act because they ultimately hope that in their silence, they will gain. Or at the very least not have to give more than they have already given.”

“They ask something small of you. A thing you would prefer not to do, but is not so terrible. You think you are working your way up, but in fact they are changing you. Moulding you into what they think you should be, one compromise at a time.”

The Narrator(s)

Euan Morton. He did an amazing job for both books! I loved the narration and the different voices for each character. It was very immersive.

My Thoughts

Book 1 – The Will of the Many
It reminded me a lot of Red Rising to an extent. Vis was a little bit of a Gary Stu character, to be honest, but it’s also somewhat understandable because of his background and I’ll accept it and hold my suspension of belief. I love the worldbuilding and the concept of the hierarchy magical system. I also love the bromance between Vis and Eidhin. Those were my favorite parts. I find it difficult to trust anyone else in the book for Vis at this point, but I’d trust Eidhin with my life. I do feel like the story was trying to do too much; there were too many things happening and not enough follow-through, but hopefully these are things that will be addressed in future books. Overall, I’m loving the story and characters.

Book 2 – The Strength of the Few
This book was a little confusing to listen on audio because now there are several different worlds to follow, and I found it difficult to keep track of them. It got better later into the book once I got a clearer idea of who, what, and where, we were reading about. There were a lot of exciting moments, the chariot scene was so thrilling, but again, I’ll state that we are in danger of Vis becoming too much of a Gary Stu. I also didn’t like the hypocrisy of his actions no matter his justification. Everyone has their justification on why it’s okay for them to do the things, and it doesn’t make it right, much less for Vis. As with the first book, a lot happens and it’s a bit overwhelming. I don’t know where this story is going and how many more books there’s going to be, but a lot of the plot seems overcomplicated at this point. I still really loved the story and I’m still curious about how the story’s going to go, but I may or may not finish the series depending on what comes next.

My Rating

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars.

Monthly Wrap-Up | September 2025

Posted September 30, 2025 by Haze in Monthly Wrap Up / 10 Comments

Welcome to the Monthly Wrap Up hosted by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction to share our monthly wrap-up posts that summarizes our month in books, our favorite books of the month, what we did on our blogs, and anything noteworthy we want to share.

September 2025 Wrap Up

This was a busy month for me and I didn’t read a lot of variety, but I did spend time on trying to finish a couple of series, which is good in and of itself, but they’re not completely done yet!

My September 2025 TBR Intentions

My September TBR intentions has been woefully neglected this month. I’ll be migrating them forward into October and hope I have better luck getting to them!

  1. Dragons of Winter Night by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
  2. Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
  3. Dragons of Summer Flame by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
  4. Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman
  5. Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab
  6. The Devils by Joe Abercrombie
  7. A Sorceress Comes To Call by T. Kingfisher
  8. Falling by T.J. Newman
  9. S. by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst

Books Read in September 2025

  1. Dragons of Winter Night by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
  2. Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
  3. Taste by Stanley Tucci
  4. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami
  5. Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman
  6. Carl’s Doomsday Scenario by Matt Dinniman
  7. The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook by Matt Dinniman
  8. The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

Notable Books This Month

Obviously, the Dungeon Crawler Carl series has very much taken over my brain at the moment! I am loving all of them so far, and I’m almost done with Book 5. I have about 4 hours left of it as of this writing. I mean to continue with the rest of the books and finish the series in October, but I think I’ll have to take a break and read some other books first because of library due dates and reading deadlines.

However, I must say that I loved all the books I read this month!

The Dragonlance series were amazing also! I didn’t finish it because I realized there was a book in between Dragons of Spring Dawning and Dragons of Summer Flame, and I have not acquired that book yet. I also loved Stanley Tucci’s Taste, because I love him in general and I love how he talks about food and how food has shaped some of the relationships in his life.

Most notably, I was very surprised by how much I loved What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami. I have never read his books, and I didn’t realize who the author was when I picked up this book, but I am very inspired by this book and I’m very curious to read his other books.

October 2025 TBR Intentions

I want to read the rest of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, and hopefully finish some of the books I meant to read last month.

  1. The Butcher’s Masquerade by Matt Dinniman
  2. The Eye of the Bedlam Bride by Matt Dinniman
  3. This Inevitable Ruin by Matt Dinniman
  4. Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman
  5. A Sorceress Comes To Call by T. Kingfisher
  6. Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab
  7. The Devils by Joe Abercrombie
  8. Falling by T.J. Newman

How was your month in September? What were your most memorable bookish moments? I hope you have a wonderful October with lots of great books!

Time Travel Thursday | May 9

Posted May 9, 2024 by Haze in Time Travel Thursday, Weekly Book Memes / 0 Comments

It’s Time Travel Thursday! Hosted by Emily @ Budget Tales Book Blog, this is where you get to take a look back at what you were reading this time last year (or the year before or the year before that…) and get to relive those bookish memories!

This time in 2023 I was reading:

The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey

My thoughts:

I started and stopped reading this book so many times because it was quite difficult to get into in the beginning, but I kept trying because a friend whose book recommendations I trust gushed about it so much. Once I finally got into it, I was *in* it. It was so hard to put the book down and I just needed to know what happens next. I love that there were so many interesting elements to the story, like the sentient, carnivorous trees, and the tech that is way more advanced than what we know. I found the interpersonal relationships fascinating, their beliefs and way of life, the way they learned – the tech, the intrigue, how things worked. There’s so much to this book, on so many levels! I love it!

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

This time in 2022 I was reading:

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

My thoughts:

Such a fun romantic read! I like that this one is a bit different, but I also got a bit annoyed with the lack of communication about Charlie not moving back to the city and not just straight up telling Nora. Libby’s lack of communication was also very annoying. I do like the push-pull and sexual tension with Nora and Charlie. It was written so well! I’ve read a few Emily Henry books and I’ve always enjoyed them. They’re just really easy to read and fun.

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

This time in 2021 I was reading:

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

My thoughts:

It has been a while since I watched the movie so there are a lot of details I’ve forgotten and can’t compare with the book. However, I really enjoyed the book itself – the telling of it and the way everything unfolded. There were moments of frustration and disbelief, and definitely also fear and wonder.

There’s a lot of details about the dinosaurs that I feel like we now take for granted because Jurassic Park has been in our pop culture for quite a while now, but I can’t help but wonder, if I was reading it for the first time in the time it was written, would I be asking more questions about the characteristics of the dinosaurs? Would I be more curious and skeptical about their behaviors?

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

This time in 2020 I was reading:

A Study in Scarlet Women by Sherry Thomas

My thoughts:

I really enjoyed this book and series. Charlotte “Sherlock” Holmes is definitely not what I expected but I love her, and I love the whole concept of how Sherlock came to be because of her character needing to carve out a living for herself. I read up to book 5, if I’m not mistaken, but I haven’t read the latest books so perhaps it’s time to catch up and reacquaint myself with Charlotte.

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Overall Comparisons

All 4 stars and above! I was having a great time this time in the years before. Once again, I love that they are all such different books and yet I enjoyed them all. It’s also fun to revisit because I remember really loving The Book of Koli and the other books in the series, as well as the Charlotte Holmes series.

I am currently reading The First Law series and loving it so far, so I believe it will be fun to look back on this time again next year and add another series I love to the list!

Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them? What were you reading at this time in history?

Sunday Post | Zoolights

Posted December 16, 2023 by Haze in Sunday Post, Weekly Book Memes / 35 Comments

Welcome to the Sunday Post, a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reviewer to share weekly news and updates on what we’ve been up to on our blog, with our books, and book-related happenings.

Zoolights

As promised, we went back to the zoo last week for the Zoolights!

It was amazing and far exceeded our expectations! It’s our first time going to the Zoolights, but I’m quite sure it won’t be the last. It might have to be an annual thing from now on. The lights were gorgeous, there was so much to see, everyone there were in good spirits and we bonded a little with other people there helping each other take pictures, and as luck would have it, the weather was perfect. It was cold enough to feel Christmassy, but not so cold that we felt uncomfortable.

We took a lot more pictures than these, because there was so much to see, but I’ll spare you the photo album tour. Wherever you are in the world, I hope you’re enjoying this holiday season (or if you’re not celebrating anything, I hope you’re just enjoying life in general!)!

As for my reading plans last week, I didn’t read the books I originally intended, and I had a couple of false starts (books I started but couldn’t get into), but I ended up getting sucked into Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi and absolutely loving it! So I call that a win!

Last Week on The Blog

This Week

I’m having a hard time deciding what to read because a lot of the books on my TBR are books that fit the 2024 reading challenges I signed up for, and I want to save them for the new year. However, it seems that the Finishing the Series challenge requires that you started the series before 2024, so I’m reading the first books in series I think I might want to finish for the challenge. I might end up not liking them and not wanting to continue them, and I’ve already got lots of series on the list to be finished, but at least I’m giving myself more options!

So this is just a list of books I have on my TBR that are first in a series. Obviously I won’t be able to read them all by the end of the year, but they’re here to motivate me and I’ll do my best to read a couple!

  • Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz
  • Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
  • Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
  • Stolen Heir by Holly Black
  • Dune by Frank Herbert
  • Storm Front by Jim Butcher
  • Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey
  • Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
  • A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
  • Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews

I hope you had a great week last week, and I hope you have a great one again this week!
